European Bird Census Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Bird Census Council ( EBCC ) is a society founded in 1992 under Dutch law , in which ornithological experts develop Europe-wide monitoring programs and atlas projects , thereby promoting the protection of European bird populations . The aim of the EBCC is to identify changes in the distribution , abundance and demographics of European birds at an early stage by bringing together experts and communication between organizations, institutions and individuals interested in monitoring bird populations, and to provide bodies and political decision-makers relevant to nature conservation with reliable information to provide for their protection and management. To achieve these goals, the EBCC organizes workshops and conferences , publishes its own magazine ( Bird Census News ) and promotes the development of national monitoring programs.

The EBCC Atlas of Breeding Birds in Europe

The EBCC's most important project so far was the production of The EBCC Atlas of European Breeding Birds , edited by Ward JM Hagemeijer and Michael J. Blair in 1997. The atlas was the first to present Europe-wide raster distribution maps for all breeding bird species in Europe . The book is mostly written in English , but includes an introductory chapter in thirteen other European languages. The data acquisition in the field was carried out between 1985 and 1988. Further field work is to follow in the years 2013 to 2017 in order to publish an updated atlas with more than 5,000 50 × 50 km grid fields with the distribution and abundance of more than 500 breeding bird species.
