European Chemicals Bureau

The European Chemicals Bureau ( ECB , English European Chemicals Bureau ) was in Ispra in Italy . It was under the responsibility of the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission .

Areas of responsibility

The ECB was the coordination point for the data and risk assessment processes of hazardous chemicals . It provided scientific and technical support for the design, development, implementation and monitoring of EU directives on hazardous chemicals. The Office coordinated the EU Risk Assessment Programs, which assess the risks of existing and new substances for workers, consumers and the environment. It also supported the legal classification and labeling, the notification of new substances, the exchange of information on the import and export of dangerous substances, the development and harmonization of test methods and the authorization of biocides .

In 2006, the new European chemicals legislation ( REACH ) transferred the tasks to the European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki .
