Eurosur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eurosur ( English European border surveillance system , German  European Border Surveillance System ) is a monitoring system of the European Union , in which drones , reconnaissance equipment , offshore sensors, high-resolution cameras and satellite detection systems are used to the illegal immigration to monitor in the EU member states. The start of the program was decided by the European Parliament on October 10, 2013. On December 2, 2013, the system was initially launched in 18 EU countries and Norway .

The system was developed by Frontex and is primarily an information exchange program that supports the cooperation of national border authorities. The aim is to get information about current refugee movements and so-called smuggling organizations as early as possible . Furthermore, the “Rescuing people in need” has also been included in the Eurosur regulation.

Criticism and costs

The program has been criticized from various sides, especially because the lifesaving aspect (e.g. rescue of refugees from wrecked boats) lags behind that of surveillance.

As of October 2013, 244 million euros from the budget of the European Union have been made available for the installation and operation of the system until 2020. Critics fear, however, that the project will cost more like a billion. Other sources speak of 340 million euros.
