Eustathios Rhomaios

Eustathios Rhomaios ( Greek  Εὐστάθιος [ὁ] Ῥωμαῖος ) was a Byzantine judge in the 10th and 11th centuries.

Eustathios, who was given the nickname "ὁ Ῥωμαῖος" (= "the Romans") because of his knowledge of ("Roman") jurisprudence, lived approximately from 960/62 to 1033/35 and held numerous offices in the Byzantine judicial hierarchy Judge (λιτὸς κριτής) up to the Magistros (μάγιστρος) and Drungarios tes viglas (δρουγγάριος τῆς βίγλας) and thus became not only the highest Byzantine judge of the early 11th century, but also the most famous jurist of the entire Middle Byzantine period. Although only three or four of his judgments have survived in full, the Peira contains a large number of excerpts from his decisions. His high reputation led to the fact that in the late Byzantine period some foreign texts, especially the Tractatus de creditis , were ascribed to him.
