Evan J. Crane

Evan Jay Crane (* 1889 in Columbus (Ohio) ; † 1966 ) was an American chemist. From 1915 to 1958 he was editor of Chemical Abstracts .

Crane received his degree in chemistry from Ohio State University in 1911 , with an honorary doctorate in 1938. He then worked for the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) in Columbus until his retirement in 1958 and beyond. Austin M. Patterson was initially his boss there.

In addition to his contributions to the development of chemical literature, he also made important contributions to chemical nomenclature.

In 1951 he received the Priestley Medal and in 1953 the Austin M. Patterson Award. He was first chairman of the Chemical Literature Division of the American Chemical Society. In 1937 he received the Chemical Industry Medal .
