from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Evangelist John
Fol. 96

The Gospels of Constantinople is an illustrated manuscript from the second half of the 13th century from Constantinople . It is one of the few surviving manuscripts from the time of Latin rule in Constantinople.

The manuscript consists of 364 parchment sheets in the format 33.5 × 20 cm. It contains the texts of the four Gospels of the New Testament in Greek with a parallel translation into Latin . 51 colored miniatures have been preserved, some of which are damaged. They show the portraits of the evangelists as well as representations from miracle stories, parables and passion stories of the individual gospels. The motifs and their arrangement in the text are similar to the illustrations in a manuscript that is now kept in the Iviron monastery on Mount Athos.

The manuscript is now in the French National Library in Paris , signature Grec. 54.
