Evangelical Lutheran Orphanage
The Evangelical Lutheran Orphanage is a listed eaves side building with a gable roof and a dwelling in Kempten . The counterpart to the Protestant orphanage is the Catholic orphanage .
History and description
There are two lower transverse wings on the courtyard side. The orphanage was built between 1708 and 1713 as a replacement for a building destroyed by the Thirty Years' War and is located directly at the city fortifications of Kempten . The Kathreineloch dungeon is located in the cellar of the orphanage . In the Middle Ages , serious criminals were imprisoned here.
Today the former orphanage is used as an annex to the An der Sutt elementary school . In 2011 a bridge was built across the school yard from the new to the old school building. The rebuilt orphan gate is on the other side of the street.
