The Wiehl Church is a Protestant church in the center of Wiehl and one of the largest Wiehl churches and lies in its east-west direction parallel to the main street.

history

A wooden church was originally built on this site around 700 . This was destroyed in a fire by pagan Saxons in 772 ( according to District Administrator Sybel ). Around 1000, a stone choir building in the Romanesque style was built with the help of the St. Cassius Monastery in Bonn. Around 1100 there was an extension to the west with a nave. The construction of the sacristy in 1522 and the construction of the side and central nave by Count Wilhelm the Elder of Homburg in 1568 completed the church. Due to the dilapidation of the old nave, a new nave was built between 1841 and 1843, the inauguration of which took place on November 22, 1843.

The currently 56 meter high church tower, which was built in the Byzantine style, was built around the year 1150 and has shaped the cityscape of Wiehl ever since. The tower made of quarry stone had to be plastered to preserve it. His helmet was destroyed by artillery fire on April 10, 1945 and replaced a few meters lower in June 1949.

The Lutheran confession was introduced in Wiehl around 1568, which was replaced by the reformed confession in 1605 by Count Georg V zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.

The nave was rebuilt several times. The bell tower stayed in place. The interior was originally oriented towards the tower towards the west, so in 1956 it was redesigned and redesigned in the style of a "reformed preaching church". The interior was turned by 90 degrees towards the south, where 3 large picture windows with scenes from the Old Testament and New Testament are also taken up. With the new organ in 1984, the church also received a new floor with underfloor heating. Another redesign took place in 2002, where the benches gave way to flexible seating in the lower part and a light color choice complemented the overall picture. In addition, the elevation disappeared together with the pulpit with the following addition to the middle picture window by the artist Karl Blau, the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37). The font from the 12th century was preserved. The latter was done according to the model: By God's power we are an open church. We live God's love and celebrate living worship. In 2013 the church received new exterior lighting, which was adapted to the town hall.

Evangelical Church in Wiehl after the restoration

In 2014 the nave was renovated and the quarry stone facade exposed again. The renovation of the tower took place until August 2016. Here, too, new plaster was dispensed with and the quarry stone tower now again characterizes the cityscape. Assessments by an architect revealed that the tower may have been built before the 12th century. In addition, the color of the doors of the east and west exits was removed and the oak was brought back.

organ

The organ has 2  manuals , 26  registers and 1,371  pipes . For the new construction in 1984 by the Schuke company in Potsdam , nine registers and 399 pipes from the old Ibach organ were used. Due to construction dust from the renovation and other small defects, it has no longer been playable since summer 2014. The restoration is being planned and will probably begin in 2019. As an interim solution, a rental organ from Oppel with eight stops on two manuals and a pedal has been rented since September 2015.

Bells

Bell tower of the church

Only the large 1482 kg bell with the tone "C" from 1508 remained in the tower from the original peal. This was confiscated during World War II and found again in the Hamburg bell cemetery and was finally brought back before Christmas in 1947. In 1965, 3 new bronze bells from the Rincker company in Sinn (Hesse) added to the bell chair.
