The Evangelical Church Vorchdorf in the market town of Vorchdorf in Upper Austria dates from 1955–1959. The Evangelical daughter community AB Vorchdorf is integrated into the pastoral care room of the Evangelical Parish Church Stadl-Paura. The parish is part of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria and belongs to the Evangelical Superintendentur Upper Austria . The church of Vorchdorf is also called Heilandskirche .

The Protestant Church

The church was built from 1955 in four years of community work by the evangelical population. On November 15, 1959, the Heilandskirche was inaugurated by superintendent Wilhelm Mensing-Braun . In 1961 the first curator procured the bell. An organ came from Düsseldorf as a gift, which was installed and supplemented in 1968/69. In the 1980s, the parish built an extension with a community hall and group rooms.

The church interior with its 14 rows of benches and the gallery offers space for around 300 people. The 11 meter high church tower has three bells. The Linz architect Taferner was responsible for the planning.

History of the Protestant Congregation

While many villages and towns had become Protestant through their Protestant rulers during the Reformation, Vorchdorf remained predominantly Catholic as a monastery parish. In the 1750s around 20 people were sent to Transylvania because of their Protestant faith. The tolerance patent of 1781 issued by Emperor Joseph II allowed the reestablishment of Protestant parishes in the Habsburg lands. In today's Austria a total of 48 tolerance communities were created by 1795. At that time there were hardly any Protestants in the Vorchdorf area. Around 160 years later, around 1940, there was only one Protestant family left in Vorchdorf.

In November 1944 a number of (Protestant) war refugees came to Vorchdorf, they all came from the Bistritz deanery in northern Transylvania. After the war ended, they began building their own homes, creating a settlement of around 40 houses. In 1955 the church building association was founded. The local Catholic residents also took part in the Upper Austria-wide building block campaign with generous donations. With financial help from the Gustav-Adolf-Werk, the church was completed in 1959.

Originally Vorchdorf was a preaching office of the Evangelical Parish Church in Gmunden. On December 25, 1962, the elevation to the Evangelical daughter church took place. In July 1970, the Vorchdorf daughter parish was spun off from the Gmunden parish and incorporated into the Evangelical parish of Stadt-Paura. Stadl-Paura was itself a subsidiary of the Evangelical Parish Church in Wels until the parish was raised in 1970 .

Demographic peculiarity in the Gmunden district

The Gmunden district has the highest density of Protestant religious buildings in the state of Upper Austria. More than half of the 20 political communities have a Protestant church building. There are seven Protestant churches in the judicial district of Bad Ischl and four churches in the judicial district of Gmunden .
