Marek Kuczma

Marek Kuczma (born October 10, 1935 in Katowice , † June 13, 1991 ibid) was a Polish mathematician and university professor .

career

After finishing school in his hometown, Kuczma studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . There he was a student of Stanisław Gołąb and obtained his doctorate under his guidance in 1961. In Kraków he also completed his habilitation in 1963, before returning to Katowice as a lecturer and (later) professor in the same year . Among other things, he was director of the Mathematical Institute at the Silesian University of Katowice from 1969 to 1973. In addition, Kuczma was involved in science, for example on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Science as an employee of the mathematical committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

Kuczma had an excellent reputation both as a university lecturer and as a scientific advisor and researcher . Under his guidance, thirteen of his students achieved doctorates. Marek Kuczma is considered to be the founder of the Polish school of analysis of functional equations and inequalities, which achieved a high reputation not least because of his achievements and under his leadership.

Private

Marek Kuczma's life was overshadowed by a serious illness resulting from a stroke in 1978. This was followed by a second, which made him dependent on a wheelchair in his final years. Nevertheless, thanks to the care of his wife Krystyna, he was able to continue working scientifically. He passed away after being hospitalized for seven months.

Marek Kuczma is the author or co-author of around 180 scientific publications and also author of three specialist books , in particular the well-known monograph An Introduction to the Theory of Functional Equations and Inequalities ( German  introduction to the theory of functional equations and inequalities ).
