Evangelical City Church (Leonberg)
The Evangelical City Church Leonberg is a Protestant church building in Leonberg . The church is dedicated to John the Baptist; the three-aisled basilica was built in several stages, probably beginning shortly after the city was founded in the 13th century.
Building history
When the city was founded around 1250, the first church was built on the site of the city church, as a branch church of St. Michael in Dilgshausen.
The construction of today's church began around the year 1300. First the central nave was built in the Romanesque style. Later, the Romanesque round arches of the arcades of the central nave were each provided with a Gothic pointed arch.
At the beginning of the 15th century the nave was extended to the west; in addition, the vestibule was added. At the end of the 15th century, the Gothic, polygonal final choir with ribbed vault was built. The church has now been consecrated to St. John the Baptist. At the end of the 15th century, the Marienkapelle at the east end of the north aisle and the sacristy annex were built.
In 1574 the originally three-story church tower was raised by two stories; the tower circumference, the bell-shaped roof dome and the four lions by Jeremias Schwartz were created. In 1680 the interior was redesigned and equipped with baroque style elements, including a. the altar and the pulpit.

Furnishing
The current organ in the town church was built in 1964 by the Walcker organ building company. This instrument is to be replaced by a new building with 52 registers and an effect register on three manuals and a pedal. In the new organ some registers of the Walcker organ are to be reused. The instrument is to be placed on the first gallery and in parts also on the second gallery, which for this purpose is to be reduced to the state before 1964.
In the town church there are numerous grave monuments of people of the “honorable nature” of Leonberg from the period between 1570 and 1650. The monuments were created by Jeremias Schwartz and sons, as life-size figures or as prayers under the crucifix.
