Evangelical town church Ellwangen
The baroque town church of Ellwangen is a Protestant church in the center of Ellwangen that has shaped the townscape of Ellwangen .
Jesuit Church
The foundation stone of the church, originally built as a Jesuit church, was laid in 1724 by Father Bovet. The church was built according to plans by the two Swiss Jesuits Brother Jakob Amrhein and Father Guldimann in the Baroque style . The volute-studded gable shows the two religious saints Franz Xaver and Ignatius .
The elaborate, still preserved ceiling frescoes were created by Christoph Thomas Scheffler , a student of the fresco painter Cosmas Damian Asam , and show the life of Mary. The church “To the Immaculate Conception of Mary” was consecrated on May 18, 1729.
Protestant church
After the arrival of Protestant Christians in the Ellwangen area and the equality of denominations, the church was rededicated in 1806 as the Protestant parish church. As a result, the interior of the church was redesigned, with the baroque main altar and side altars removed. Only the wrought-iron choir grille has survived to this day.
A special feature of the city church is the connecting door to the immediately adjacent Catholic basilica of St. Vitus .
organ
The organ of the town church was built in 1974 by Richard Rensch (Lauffen a. N.) in the historical case of the predecessor organ, which was built between 1879 and 1880 by the organ construction company Gebr. Link (Giengen / Brenz). Of the 17 registers of the Link organ, the registers marked in the following disposition are still available today.
In 1998 the Rensch organ was re-voiced by the organ manufacturer Lutz (Feuchtwangen) and equipped with an electronic composer system. In 1998, a Voix céleste (from c 0 ) 8 ′ in the swell was dropped without replacement ; the third note I-II (from g 0 ) 1 3 ⁄ 5 ′ + 8 ⁄ 9 ′ originally present in the breastwork was converted to the third 1 3 ⁄ 5 ′ (No. 27). The organ currently has 2848 pipes.
