history

The ESO see their origins in the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, established in 1250, which became an important refuge for poor, sick and old people as early as the Middle Ages. Together with two other hospitals that were established a little later, it played an important role in caring for people in need in Osnabrück.

In 1620 the ESO acquired the Tecklenburger Hof, which had burned down a few years earlier, and rebuilt it as an orphanage and poor house. The resulting orphan fund became an important addition to the foundations.

In the course of the Middle Ages, orphan funds and hospitals steadily expanded their property. In 1833 they used it as the basis for the establishment of the “Church and School Fund”, which initially had nothing to do with schools, but only benefited the three hospitals. Only later did the main purpose of the fund shift to supporting the Protestant schools in Osnabrück for reasons of city politics.

Social and economic upheavals at the beginning of the 19th century had far-reaching effects on the property of the foundations. Changes in land policy, for example, led to the abolition of serfdom , which gave the farms once belonging to the institutions their independence. In addition, there was a redistribution of communally used land in the early 19th century. In the process, the foundations lost part of their foundation, but received generous severance payments. In 1893, their property was finally recorded in detail for the first time: At that time they managed grounds with a size of 213 hectares , and their assets amounted to around 990,000 Reichsmarks .

The merger to form the "Evangelical Foundations Osnabrück" (ESO) finally took place in 1931. The plural in the name reflects history and takes into account the many different individual assets from which the ESO emerged.
