In the railway accident near Pioltello on January 25, 2018, a regional train derailed due to a broken rail . Three people died.

Starting position

Pioltello is about eight kilometers east of the city center in the east of the Milan conurbation at an altitude of 117  m slm

The public prosecutor initiated proceedings against four people for endangering rail traffic: the managing director and operations director of Trenord, the managing director and general director of the railway infrastructure operator Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has independently launched a further investigation.
