The Protestant inland shipping service is part of the German Seamen's Mission Duisburg and thus a member of the German Seamen's Mission . Inland shipping pastoral care takes place on the church boat Johann Hinrich Wichern , which is based in Duisburg's inland port. The church boat is a floating church and parish hall in one and is usually underway four days a week on 700 km of waterways and ports along the Rhine. His crew visits around 1,000 ships per year in this way. The service providers are the church district of Duisburg and the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland.

With 3.7 million TEU (unit for standard containers ) each year, Duisburg is the world's largest inland container handling point.

Club work

The crew of Johann Hinrich Wichern includes two volunteer skippers as well as a pastor and a deaconess. Services, baptisms and weddings take place on board. The crew brings newspapers, organizes Christmas concerts and is on the road as pastors. The Protestant pastors look after seafarers of all religions and denominations, work is done ecumenically and a Catholic pastor is called in if necessary. On-board support is of particular importance for inland vessels whose operators are not based in Schengen countries; as of 2020, these are Eastern European countries. These seafarers cannot use the visa-free stay in port cities ( Section 25 Residence Ordinance ) and are therefore not allowed to leave the ship.

Furnishing

The church boat is almost 15 meters long and 4.20 meters wide. It has 10 beds, a kitchen and a sanitary area. Up to 16 people can take part in church services and family celebrations.
