Mary Evelyn "Billie" Frechette (born September 15, 1907 in Neopit , Wisconsin , United States , † January 13, 1969 in Shawano , Wisconsin) was an American singer and waitress, who through her personal relationship with John Dillinger in the early 1930s became known.

Her relationship with Dillinger lasted about six months until her arrest and imprisonment in 1934. According to other sources, her relationship with Dillinger began earlier. Her two-year prison sentence ended in 1936. She then toured the country with the von Dillinger family as the “Crime Does Not Pay Show” for five years.

Life

Frechette was born on the Menominee Indian Reservation. She described the origin of her mother (née Mary Labell) as "half French and half Indian" and that of her father as a simple French. Her paternal great-grandfather was Moses Frechette Sr., a Québec fur trader who moved to the United States in 1850 and was naturalized in Brown Township, Michigan and lived in Menominee. His first wife was their great-grandmother, their parents were Mawsawquot and Poway. The first of eight generations of North American Frechettes was Guillaume, who came to Quebec City from France between 1655 and 1680.

Moses Frechette Sr.'s parents were Charles and Ursule (Girouard) Frechette. Moses was born in Quebec on December 10, 1824. He married Marie Leclair Nokishiki and they had 12 children. Moses Frechette Jr. and two of his siblings continued to live on the Menominee Reservation, he was the father of Evelyn Frechette.

Her father died when she was eight years old.

In 1925 she married Welton Sparks, who was convicted of a mail robbery and was serving a prison sentence that same year.

Entanglement with John Dillinger

Frechette was arrested on April 9, 1934 by an FBI team led by Melvin Purvis . Her arrest was watched by Dillinger and a companion. The prosecution charged her with harboring the criminal Dillinger in her apartment in Twin Cities. She was sentenced to two years in federal prison plus a $ 2,000 fine.

Next life

Frechette returned to Menominee, where she married twice more. She died of cancer in 1969.
