Everything is a desktop search for filenames and directories on NTFS - drives under Windows . The program is index-based and therefore finding very fast, it takes about 10 MB of RAM and disk space on Windows 10. It is also for commercial use for free .

The tool does not access the index of Windows' own search back, but to build your own database of file names and directories from the Master File Table (MFT) of the NTFS - drives . Everything creates this database within a few seconds when it is started for the first time, after which every change in the file system is updated in the database on the basis of the NTFS journal . The very high speed of indexing only works on local NTFS hard drives, not on USB drives with a FAT file system or network drives , where it only has normal speed. Due to its construction, Everything requires administrator rights, otherwise it cannot access the MFT. Alternatively, the program can run as a system service .
search
As soon as you enter the first character, Everything begins to list all suitable file names. The observance of diacritical marks , e.g. B. Umlauts can be activated in the search standards. Everything has search operators like wildcards and can use Boolean operators , and searches can be activated with regular expressions .
Extensions
The program can be addressed via an SDK and expanded with plugins.
For the FAR Manager there is the third party programmed plugin "LiveFileSearch", which can access the Everything service.
If everything is installed on another machine and its built-in ETP / FTP server is activated, you can connect to it, which is also possible via start parameters. Or you can connect to the built-in web server, which can also allow file downloads. With the additional program es.exe there is an independent command line version , which can also be redirected to a file for further processing.
Everything is multilingual through language packs and can also be downloaded as portable software .
history
The software was first published at the end of 2004, version 1.0 then in 2008. After a 4-year development break, an improved version was released in 2013, which was followed by another update in 2014. Several beta versions were then offered. At least one new stable version was published in each of the years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
