Sample domains
The example domains example.com , example.net , example.org and example.edu are second-level domains that have been permanently reserved by the Internet Engineering Task Force , as suggested in Section 3 of the quasi-standard RFC 2606. They can therefore not be claimed by third parties and are primarily used as example domains in instructions, documentation or manuals. So you can understand her as a kind of Erika Mustermann for domains.
Protection by the IANA
With the reservation, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) also makes the domains available for use in software documentation and instructions for use . The authors of such instructions for use can therefore be sure that they are choosing a domain for illustration that does not lead to an organization that actually exists or is associated with the subject of the manual. If readers of the instructions for use call up this domain because they have not recognized the exemplary nature of the reference in the instructions, they will be informed that it is only an example.
Calling up one of these domains in a web browser explicitly indicates this purpose:
“This domain is established to be used for illustrative examples in documents. You may use this domain in examples without prior coordination or asking for permission. ”
"This domain was provided for documentation purposes. You may use this domain in documents as an illustrative example without further coordination or approval. "
Addresses such as "username@example.com" can also be used for information about the registration process on a website. Such an address shows the user, for example, the correct formatting in which he must enter his own data.
German example domain
The domain beispiel.de was established in March 2018 by the operators of search engine Fireball taken and placed as a neutral example domain of commercial-free website. However, in contrast to those provided by the IANA, this domain does not have an official status.
Counterexample
Example domains that are registered by individuals or companies can be found in documentation or manuals. For example, domain.de or exampleurl.de is specified. The use of these domains is to be viewed critically in that the author may mislead his readers to call up these domains without knowing what content is behind them.

Analogous to the example domains, there are also IP addresses reserved for use in examples and documentation .
