In the exorcism death in Frankfurt in 2015 on December 5, 2015, a then 41-year-old Korean woman was suffocated by her family members in the course of a forced spiritual exorcism . The case was noticed internationally.

background

The South Korean family to which the victim belonged came to Germany in autumn 2015 to open a restaurant. In their apartment building in Sulzbach , Hesse , the family members felt persecuted by the devil and demons . That's why they moved to the Intercontinental Hotel in Frankfurt. The act took place there after the first night on the morning of December 5, 2015.

The later main defendant, the 44-year-old cousin of the victim, is a trained nurse and had already carried out two "exorcizations" before the crime. According to the investigators, the accused were Christians with shamanistic and Buddhist influences.

did

The 41-year-old victim was possessed by the devil, according to her relatives. Therefore, the family members wanted to perform an exorcism under the guidance of the cousin. They threw the victim to the ground and severely hit the woman's stomach and chest. The cousin first put a towel and later a clothes hanger in the victim's mouth, on which the woman suffocated in agony. The cloth was used to prevent the victim's screams. According to investigators, the ordeal lasted at least two hours.

After the deadly exorcism, the cousin had called a pastor from the Korean Evangelical Zion Congregation. The horrified man notified the hotel reception and the police after arriving at the Frankfurt Hotel Intercontinental .

process

In October 2016, the trial began before the Frankfurt am Main Regional Court against the five people involved in the crime. The public prosecutor had initially demanded eight years in prison for the main defendant. According to the juvenile criminal chamber, the 44-year-old main defendant was primarily responsible for the crime, as she was the only adult in the group who determined what happened.

After the judge informed him about the legal possibilities, the public prosecutor's office pleaded for bodily harm resulting in death instead of murder, since there was no willful intent to kill.

The four other defendants were the victim's 16-year-old son, his 16-year-old cousin, the 22-year-old son and the cousin's 19-year-old daughter. The presiding judge named the "religious, spiritual delusion" as the reason for the act. They were sentenced to juvenile prison terms.
