Ezerites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ezerites (Greek Ἐζερῖται Ezeritai ) were a Slavic tribe in the Peloponnese in Greece from the 10th to the 14th century.

history

Slavs have settled in the Balkans since the 7th century, and in the Peloponnese at the latest since the 9th century. The Melingers are first mentioned by Emperor Konstantinos Porphyrogennetos in his work De administrando imperio for the year 934. After a Slavic uprising, the Byzantine Emperor Romanos I sent troops to the Peloponnese . After that, the Ezerites were able to stay in the mountains with the Melingians , while the other Slavs were resettled to Bithynia .

In 1340 a diocese of Ezera (Ἐζερά) was mentioned, which belongs to the metropolis Lacedaemon.

Settlement area

Its name probably comes from the Slavic word ezerъ "lake" and is probably a translation of the ancient place name Helos "swamp". Thus the Ezerites are likely to have settled in the estuary of the Vasilipotamos .
