The Mumpf – Bad Säckingen ferry is a historic yaw cable ferry on the Upper Rhine at Rhine kilometer 133 on the left.

The pure passenger ferry runs from Mumpf in Aargau to Bad Säckingen in Germany and runs on Sundays and public holidays from May 1st to September 30th according to a special timetable.

history

The Mumpfer village law of 1535 testifies to the ferry law: Item they also have a right to Mumpf uf dem Rein, since one likes to overpass the people, the ferries should pass any person who wants to overfeed to a stebler. Village law applied to Mumpf from the Middle Ages until around 1800. First the ferry crossed the Rhine with rudder power. Since 1860, at the instigation of the Sonnenwirt FJ Waldmeyer, she has owned a wire rope and operates as a yaw ferry . Until 1928 there was a federal secondary customs office at the Fähristeg .

The ferry was often paralyzed by contemporary history, for example in 1914 when the First World War broke out . The rope was even cut during the Second World War . Lots of people wanted to escape to Switzerland , holding on to the ferry rope . The Nazi regime ordered the grumpy blacksmith Josef Müller to cut the rope on the German side under strict supervision.

Market vendors, pilgrims, Mumpfer spa guests, farmers and workers in the Säckingen factories, they used the Mumpfer ferry. Today it is used by hikers and cyclists for crossing. The Mumpf pontoon driving association operates it today on behalf of the Mumpf municipality. The city of Bad Säckingen makes a significant contribution to the annual deficit .

functionality

The ferry from Mumpf is a cable ferry. A swivel lever is mounted on the ferry. The twelve-meter-long “yaw rope” is attached to it, and at the other end it hangs from a rider's pulley. This roller can move freely on the 200 meter long steel cable with a diameter of 25 millimeters, which is stretched across the Rhine. After pushing off, the ferryman puts the swivel lever in the direction of the departure pier. After the first few meters, he uses the rudder to bring the ferry at an angle of up to 45 ° to the flow of the river, depending on the force of the current. The current pressure now directs the ferry across the Rhine. Before mooring, the ferryman uses the rudder to regulate the speed and position of the ship so that he can moor gently. "Only knowledgeable, strong men who are not devoted to drinking and with normal organs of sight and hearing" may be employed as ferrymen.
