Fåberg (municipality)

Fåberg is a historic municipality in the province of Oppland (incorporated into Innlandet in 2020 ) in Norway . 1838 was congregation Fåberg (notation to 1921 Faaberg ) independent municipality. The municipality extended over 478 km² and enclosed the formerly smaller municipality of Lillehammer . In 1964 both municipalities were merged into one. This was named after the smaller community of Lillehammer.

The name of the community was derived from the former vicarage Faaberg. The meaning of the name is not known. The spellings Fogaberg and Fagaberg have been handed down from the Middle Ages .

At the 1865 census , the community had 6337 inhabitants. In 1875 the population decreased to 5,759 and in 1900 again to 5,419.

The Dovrebanen and the Gudbrandsdalsvegen were important traffic arteries for the municipality .
