The Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) is a sports association in France . She is responsible for the development of rugby in all its forms (rugby union, 7-a-side rugby, juniors, women, etc.), for the management of over 1900 clubs with more than 200,000 licensed players, the implementation of regional championships and the Training of referees. The association is divided into 13 leagues (then committees) in France and 1 league in the overseas regions (it's called Supra Ligue Outre-Mer). Professional sport, on the other hand, is organized by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR).

Territorial division of the committees

There were several specifics about the committees. In the north of the country these cover up to three administrative regions , while in the south (and especially in the south-west) their area is much smaller. This also corresponds to the far greater popularity of the sport there and the comparatively larger number of clubs. Three committees cross-border: Ligue Régionale Grand Est de Rugby (LRGER) is also responsible for Luxembourg and Saarland, Midi-Pyrénées for Andorra and Côte d'Azur for Monaco .

The FFR was founded on May 13, 1919 ; she replaced the rugby commission of the USFSA multi-sport federation . In 1934, under the leadership of the FFR, the Fédération Internationale de Rugby Amateur was established as a competitor to the International Rugby Board (IRB). It was not until 1978 that the FFR joined the IRB.
