The driving license number or driving license number of the driving license in Germany is used to uniquely identify the document. For card driving licenses, it consists of a four-digit code from the licensing authority, the so-called authority code, followed by the five-digit sequential alphanumeric number ("00000" - "ZZZZZ"), followed by a check digit and an alphanumeric copy number.

The composition and formation is shown using the number "B072RRE2I55" of the model driving license.

Driving license key

All licensing authorities have a four-digit identifier. The first letter indicates the federal state in alphabetical order of the federal states. "A" corresponds to Baden-Württemberg and "P" to Thuringia. The next two digits mark the districts and cities in this state.

B072: “B” stands for the second federal state in alphabetical order Bavaria, “07” for the district of Dachau, “2” could be a (nonexistent) branch of the district office.

Consecutive alphanumeric number

The numbers are continued with capital letters, the tenth driver's license from an authority thus has the number "0000A". To calculate the numerical value of a letter, nine must be added to the position in the alphabet. A new position is only reached after ten digits and 26 letters. With this coding, up to 36 5, i.e. 60 million numbers can be assigned by one authority.

RRE2I: R = 18 + 9 = 27 E = 5 + 9 = 14 I = 7 + 9 = 18. This corresponds to the consecutive number 27 * 36 4 + 27 * 36 3 + 14 * 36 2 + 2 * 36 1 + 18 * 36 0 = 46,627,578

Check digit

To calculate the check digit , the digits and letters of the authority code and the consecutive number are multiplied by the factors 9, 8, 7… 1, the results are added and the remainder of the division by 11 is formed. If this remainder is 10, an "X" is used as the check digit. The weighting corresponds to the procedure for the vehicle identification number .

B072RRE2I: 11 * 9 + 0 * 8 + 7 * 7 + 2 * 6 + 27 * 5 + 27 * 4 + 14 * 3 + 2 * 2 + 18 = 467. Division by 11 results in 42 with remainder 5. This is the check digit.

In a spreadsheet program , the check digit can be validated using the following formula ; the driver's license number is in cell A1:

=WENN(UND(LÄNGE($A$1)=11;REST(SUMMENPRODUKT(DEZIMAL(TEIL($A$1;ZEILE($1:$9);1);36);{9;8;7;6;5;4;3;2;1});11)=WERT(WECHSELN(TEIL($A$1;10;1);"X";10)));"ok";"falsch")

Issue number

Starting with 1, this number is increased when a new driver's license is issued. This is e.g. This is the case, for example, when an additional permit class is added, or after the validity has expired. After the number 9, the letter A is continued here.
