The LM4 series was put into service by Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (FCL) in 1975/76 to replace the steam traction in freight and construction trains. The nine machines were developed by Breda and Ferrosud on the basis of the LDe series locomotives used by the Ferrovie della Sardegna .

The diesel-hydraulic locomotives are powered by two diesel engines from the Bari- based manufacturer Isotta Fraschini Motori . The bogies are of the same type as those of the M2.120 railcars . The LM4.601, 606 and 609 were assigned to the Cosenza depot for service on the routes to Catanzaro and San Giovanni in Fiore , 602-604 were stationed in Bari and the remaining machines came to Gioia Tauro . In 1981 LM4.601 and in 1985 number 607 were moved to Bari.

With the division of the Ferrovie Calabro Lucane, the locomotives 601, 606 and 609 came to the Ferrovie della Calabria and the remaining machines to the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane.
