The Fragments of the Greek Historians

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fragments of the Greek historians (abbreviation FGrHist recommended by the editor , but FGrH is also in use) is the title of a collection of text fragments from otherwise unsold works from ancient Greece . These are quotations from later (also Roman ) authors from the individual works. The "FGrHist" were founded in 1923 by Felix Jacoby and continue the work of the Fragmenta historicorum Graecorum (5 vols. Paris 1841–1884) edited by Karl Müller . They serve as an important and indispensable aid for ancient historians and philologists.

During Jacoby's lifetime, the first three of the six parts he planned appeared in fifteen volumes, which in turn consist of numerous partial volumes. An international group of researchers is working on the continuation of the collection and has presented several volumes of the fourth part since 1998, the fifth part is also in progress (The Fragments of the Greek Historians. Continued) . These volumes also contain a translation (mostly in English, in Part 5 also partly with a German or Italian translation) and a new critical commentary.

Furthermore, Brill's New Jacoby appears online , which also offers an English translation and commentary. Most of the historians already considered by Jacoby are included in this collection.

In 2005 the volumes edited by Jacoby and a three-volume index published in 1999 as a printed edition were published in a CD-ROM edition.

The Fragments of the Roman Historians has a corresponding equivalent for the field of Roman historians . For late antiquity , several texts with a German translation and a philological-historical commentary are published as part of the long-term project Small and Fragmentary Historians of Late Antiquity, which is supervised by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and the Arts .
