FIGlet font
A FIGlet font (also: FIGfont ) is a decorative font that is composed of ASCII characters to represent letters and numbers . FIGlet fonts are part of ASCII art .
The name originally comes from a computer program called FIGlet ( acronym for Frank, Ian and Glen's letters ), which uses these fonts to create ASCII art.
example
____ ____ ___ __ ____ ____ ___ __ (___) (_ _) / __) () (___) (_ _) / _ / __ ___ / / _ ) __) _) (_ ((_-.) (__) __)) (- / _ / _ \ / _ \ / __ / (__) (____) \ ___ / (____) (____) (__) / _ / \ ___ / _ // _ / \ __ /
File format
The file format for FIGlet fonts is specified in the FIGfont Version 2 FIGfont and FIGdriver Standard. The fonts are stored in ASCII files with the filename extension flf . Its content consists of a header and a list of the individual characters. The header essentially contains formatting options, information about the size of the character set and the dimensions of the characters. It can also contain free comments from the author. Optionally, the content of the file can be packed in ZIP format .
Formatting rules
An essential aspect of the FIGlet fonts are the formatting rules that are specified by specifying numerical values in the file header. You determine how the individual characters behave when they are next to or on top of each other. In addition to simple options such as “Full size” (all characters are placed next to each other without change) and “Fitting” (superfluous spaces between the characters are removed), these are in particular the so-called “smushing rules”. These rules can be used, for example, to stipulate that adjacent characters /
and can be merged \
into a single one |
.
Example:
_____ _ __ _____ _ | ___ | ___ _ __ _ __ ___ __ _ | | _ ____ \ \ | ___ | __ _ __ _ __ ___ __ _ | | _ | | _ / _ \ | '__ | | '_ `_ \ / _` | | __ | | _____ \ \ | | _ / _ \ | '__ | '_ `_ \ / _` | __ | | _ | | (_) | | | | | | | | | | (_ | | | | _ | _____ / / | _ | (_) | | | | | | | | (_ | | | _ | _ | \ ___ / | _ | | _ | | _ | | _ | \ __, _ | \ __ | / _ / | _ | \ ___ / | _ | | _ | | _ | | _ | \ __, _ | \ __ |
