JavE [ 'dʒæɪv ] (for English . Java Ascii Versatile editor ) is a graphical text editor for ASCII art .
The main specialty of JavE is the mixture of text and graphics editor . For example, lines or more complex shapes can be drawn with the mouse, with the result appearing in the form of ASCII characters in a text file . Since the program is written in Java , it runs on Mac OS X , Linux , UNIX and Windows, among others .
In addition to a large number of tools for editing static text, including handling FIGlet fonts , the editor also offers the option of creating and playing back ASCII animations.
history
The first version of JavE was created in November 2000. At that time it was not a standalone application, but a Java applet that ran directly in compatible browsers . Through the collaboration via the newsgroup alt.ascii-art , the software was expanded over two years to include techniques from the pool of ASCII art artists and finally expanded into an independent desktop application. The stable version 5.0 has been available since June 2002.
After 2002, further development came to a halt temporarily. A new version 6.0 has been worked on since 2005.
License
Up to and including version 5, the software was released as freeware . With version 6.0, the program is to be published as free software for the first time under the Common Public License .
