FLIR was founded in 1978 and developed thermal imaging cameras , also known as Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR), for airborne applications. Towards the end of the 1980s, the development of cameras for the precise measurement of temperature differences began. The company's growth was also fueled in 1990 by the acquisition of the thermographic division of Hughes Aircraft Company . In November 2016 it was announced that FLIR would acquire Prox Dynamics AS, a Norwegian manufacturer of miniaturized UAS , for US $ 134 million. Prox Dynamics is the developer of the PD-100 helicopter drone , which is also used by the German armed forces. The takeover of Endeavor Robotics, a former division of Roomba manufacturer iRobot, followed in February 2019 . Endeavor Robotics produces robotic systems that can be used, among other things, by military units to defuse explosive devices.
