Lists on the subject

The FN-Browning self-loading rifle cal 22 is a self-loading rifle for small bore cartridges with a detachable barrel, developed by John Moses Browning around 1900 and patented in 1914 (US Patent 1083384, Jan 6, 1914) . It was manufactured between 1914 and 1976 by Fabrique Nationale d'Armes, Herstal in Belgium, production continued at Miroku, Japan. In the USA it was made by Remington Arms.

Technology & description

The FN Browning self-loading rifle in .22 caliber is a shooting recoil loader with a ground lock. In the return movement, the lock is braked by the recoil spring and the firing pin spring lying next to it. The fired case is ejected downwards. The weapon is loaded by pulling the slide back as far as it will go and then releasing it at a projection protruding from the bottom of the lock case. The tube magazine is located in the piston, the cartridges are pushed in through the spring-loaded feeder located in a removable sleeve. The opening for reloading the individual cartridges is on the right side or at the top of the piston. The barrel can be removed with a quarter turn thanks to the interrupted thread. The lock and ignition mechanism, which is located in a frame in the lock housing, can then be removed without tools.

use

The weapon is used for plinking , i.e. H. shooting in open terrain, used as a light closed season rifle and for pest control.

variants

FN-Browning cal 22

The self-loading rifle, manufactured under license by FN Herstal, was built in two versions from 1914, one for the .22 cartridge short , capacity (16 rounds), the other for the .22 lfB cartridge , (11 rounds). The cartridges are not interchangeable. In weapons manufactured after production began up to 1920, the reload opening was attached to the top of the pistol grip, in later weapons it is on the right side of the butt.

Remington Model 241

The first variant was launched in 1914 under the name "M16 Autoloading .22 Caliber Rifle". Their chamber did not allow the use of commercially available .22 cartridges. She fired a cartridge with smokeless powder, specially dimensioned by Remington for this weapon and manufactured until 1934, since the .22 cartridges offered at the time contained various strengths, including gunpowder charges. As with the Model 1903 self-loading rifle made by Winchester, which fired the .22 automatic Winchester cartridge, sales were not satisfactory. From 1919 the rifle was launched under the name Remington Model 24 for the .22 short and under the Remington Model 241 for the .22 long rifle. From 1936 to 1941 and after the war until 1951, the weapon was offered in a slightly heavier version as the Remington Speedmaster 241 .22 Autoloading Rifle. Because the sleeve is ejected downwards, an element can be mounted at the ejection opening which rejects the sleeve to the right.

Scope mount

In order to allow the assembly of a riflescope , both manufacturers offered a variant with grooves milled into the breech block.
