The E.740 of Ferrovie Nord Milano were a series of electric railcars that were built in three sub-series.
history
The E.740-01 to 07 were built in 1928 by the Officine Elettromeccaniche Tallero (OEFT) as the E.800 control car, designed for the newly manufactured E.700 . The conversion as a railcar took place in 1951 and was equipped with electronic equipment from Compagnia Generale di Elettricità (CGE).
Outwardly, these railcars looked like the E.700, but they were much more powerful (809 kW instead of 544).
The E.740-08 to 16 were built in 1953-54. Even if the electrical part remained unchanged, the box design was completely redesigned and received a more modern shape with electropneumatic doors.
In 1957 the third sub-series (E.740-17 to 24) went into operation, which received some improvements, such as driver's cabs that were extended by 30 cm .
The E.740 were used for decades together with the other old railcars ( E.700 , E.710 and E.730 ) for commuter and suburban traffic around Milan . In their final years they were also used on the S3 and S4 lines of the Milan S-Bahn . In 2009 they were still in use.
Paintwork
The E.740s were delivered in the FNM's then remaining chestnut paintwork. From 1984 they got the new white and yellow paint scheme based on the SNCF model, and in the 2000s the so-called "regional paint scheme ", white and light green.
