The Free Software Foundation Europe eV ( FSFE ) is the European sister organization of the US Free Software Foundation founded on March 10, 2001 .
Financially, legally and personally independent and organizationally equal to the North American FSF , it advocates all issues of Free Software with a focus on Europe. This is done through political work, legal support and a network of volunteer supporters. Together with other free software foundations, she takes care of global perspectives and has, for example, very strong connections to Asia and South America.
The Free Software Foundation Europe is a non-profit , non-governmental organization. After Georg Greve (2001–2009) and Karsten Gerloff (2009–2015), Matthias Kirschner is their third President, and Heiki Lõhmus has been Vice President since 2016. To coordinate the local activities of the FSFE, regional groups have been set up and coordinators have been appointed in various European countries.
In 2010 the FSFE received the Theodor Heuss Medal for exemplary democratic behavior.
