The FS ALn 663 diesel multiple units are a series of railway vehicles that were built by Fiat Ferroviaria from 1983 and are still in operation with the Italian state railways today.
history
At the beginning of the 1980s, it was decided to further develop and modernize the well-proven FS ALn 668 diesel multiple units . In contrast to its predecessor, the ALn 663 only had 63 seats, of which 12 were first and 51 were second class. According to the FS classification system, it was called “Automotrice Leggera a Nafta 663” (light, naphtha- powered railcar 663), or “ALn 663” for short.
From a mechanical-technical point of view, the ALn 663 are very similar to the ALn 668. The most noticeable change is the more angular shape of the car body. Other headlights were also installed. The passenger compartment was also modernized, so from the beginning it corresponded roughly to the interior customary in Italy today, as it was also given to the other vehicles intended for regional traffic in the course of renovations towards the end of the 1990s.
Not only the FS were supplied with ALn 663, many Italian private railways also received vehicles of this type. The FCU ALn 776 series was developed for the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra based on this type of railcar .
Although significantly fewer vehicles were purchased from the Aln 663 than from the ALn 668, they are still relatively common today on non-electrified branch lines, even if they have recently been more and more displaced by the Minuetto trains .
