The FTSE / JSE All-Share Index is the most important share index in South Africa . It includes all companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange . The 40 largest stocks by market capitalization are summarized in the FTSE / JSE Top 40 Index .

calculation

The FTSE / JSE All-Share Index is a price index in which all stock companies of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) are listed. They cover 99 percent of the market capitalization and trading volume of the exchange. To be included in the index, the company must be financially viable, have high liquidity and be traded on the Johannesburg stock exchange.

The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the listed companies. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The composition of the index is reviewed every three months (March, June, September, December). The calculation is updated every 60 seconds during JSE trading hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time (10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. CET ).

history

20th century

The index was published for the first time on October 2, 1978 under the name JSE Actuaries Overall Index (base value: 264.30 points) and was calculated back to 1960 (daily prices) and 1926 (monthly prices).

By October 19, 1987, the index rose 960.9 percent to a closing level of 2,804 points. After Black Monday on the same day on the New York Stock Exchange , when the value of the Dow Jones index plummeted 22.6 percent, the JSE Actuaries fell again. On February 12, 1988, it ended trading at 1,517 points. The loss since October 1987 is 45.9 percent. In the following 11 years, the index grew by 451.0 percent. On April 20, 1998, the stock market barometer closed at 8,358.70 points.

In 1997 and 1998 parts of the world suffered financial , currency and economic crises ( Asian crisis , Brazilian crisis , Russian crisis ). The crises had made investors in South Africa nervous and there was an increased outflow of capital. As a result, the JSE Actuaries fell by 43.8 percent by September 11, 1998 to a closing level of 4,694.44 points.

21st century

On December 10, 2001, the index closed at 10,030.17 points for the first time above the 10,000 point mark. On May 22, 2002, it ended trading at 11,686.18 points. That was an increase of 148.3 percent since September 1998. On June 24, 2002, the FTSE Group took over the calculation of the index. To reflect this change, the JSE Actuaries Overall Index has been renamed the FTSE / JSE All-Share Index . The base value is 10,815.08 points, the closing level of the old index on June 21, 2002.

In the coming year, the FTSE / JSE All-Share lost 37.0 percent of its value. On April 25, 2003 it closed at 7,361.15 points. On February 1, 2006, the index passed the 20,000 point mark for the first time with a closing level of 20,040.95 points, and on October 1, 2007, with 30,167.52 points, the 30,000 point mark for the first time. On May 22, 2008, the FTSE / JSE All-Share closed trading at 33,232.89 points. The profit since April 2003 is 351.5 percent.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. From the third quarter of 2008, the crisis increasingly affected the real economy. As a result, share prices collapsed worldwide. On October 23, 2008 the FTSE / JSE All-Share fell below the limit of 20,000 points. The stock market barometer reached a new low on November 20, 2008, when it closed trading at 17,814.42 points. Since May 22, 2008, this corresponds to a decrease of 46.4 percent. It was the biggest fall in the history of the Index.

November 20, 2008 marks the turning point in the downward trend. From autumn 2008 the FTSE / JSE All-Share was on the way up again. On January 9, 2013, it marked an all-time high with a closing score of 40,330.44 points. The profit since November 20, 2008 is 126.4 percent.
