Fabry-Perot laser

The term Fabry-Perot laser is used for laser diodes in which the two opposite end faces of the laser-active material act as partially transparent mirrors and thus represent a Fabry-Perot resonator . Such systems were named after the physicists Charles Fabry and Alfred Pérot .

As with a Fabry-Perot interferometer , depending on the length of the laser, several longitudinal oscillation modes are possible that lie within the gain bandwidth of the active area. Accordingly, the spectral bandwidth of a Fabry-Pérot laser is quite large, it is 1 ... 4 nm.

In contrast to this, distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB lasers) work with a wavelength-selective resonator or reflector and thus achieve significantly lower spectral bandwidths.

Fabry-Perot resonators are also used with other lasers, but these lasers are usually not called that.
