The Specialized Information Service (FID) Performing Arts has been set up at the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library (UB JCS) Frankfurt / Main since 2015 . The aim is to provide researchers in theater and dance studies with access to knowledge resources that were previously difficult to access.

background

Due to the extensive historical collections, the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library was commissioned in 1950 to acquire research literature in the areas of theater, film art, radio and television ( special collection areas 9.3 and 9.4) and to make it available nationwide. The special collection areas 9.3 and 9.4 were looked after in this form by the JCS University Library until the end of 1997. In 1998 the Leipzig University Library took over the areas of film technology, radio and television within the framework of the special collection area 3.5 Communication and Media Studies, Journalism. As part of the special collection area, the virtual specialist library medien buehne film was developed and operated together with the Leipzig University Library from 2007 to 2012 . With the restructuring of the funding of literature supply on the part of the German Research Foundation (DFG), this program for the subjects mentioned ended in December 2013. Instead, the funding program for the specialist information services was re-started.

description

The digital merging of archive, collection, museum and library holdings for performing arts in the FID portal performing-arts.eu is the declared goal of the FID Performing Arts. The focus is on making previously proprietary archive, research and collection data available for free research.

Just as important as the structure of the research portal is for the FID Performing Arts to act as a coordination and interface between the target group of the specialist world of theater and dance studies and the memory institutions of the performing arts. For example, the FID Performing Arts is co-initiator and coordinator of the ARCHV working group of the Society for Theater Studies. The FID Performing Arts develops and coordinates workshops and publishes materials that document the work process. The aim of the FID Performing Arts is to strengthen the position of the performing arts subjects in the long term and to develop further joint projects from the collaboration. The FID Performing Arts works closely with the Society for Theater Studies and the Federal Association of Theater Collections in Germany (TheSiD).

Technical development

Technically, the search portal is based on the open source software VuFind . The Discovery System enables a facetted search across different data collections. Via links with the help of the common authority file , a search for persons and events in the performing arts is made possible in addition to the object search.

acquisition

The acquisition and provision of books and materials on the performing arts have a long tradition at the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library. For over sixty years, from 1950 to 2015, the Frankfurt University Library was responsible for the special theater and film art collection. In addition, the Music, Theater department edited and made valuable historical collections as well as assets and bequests available for use. The FID Darstellende Kunst has worked out an acquisition and collection profile with representatives of theater and dance studies. This covers the following points:

  • Selected specialist literature that depicts research areas that are remote in terms of content (e.g. theater ethnology, shadow play)
  • Research literature published outside of Europe and the United States, or those dealing with phenomena and research subjects outside of Europe and the United States
  • Magazines with a collection unique selling point in Germany or price-intensive series
  • Provision of e-book packages licensed by the FID for specialist publishers and full-text databases for national use by the specialist world

Users can submit purchase proposals using a web form provided in the FID portal.
