The coat of arms and the flag of the Swiss canton of Ticino represent the colors red (heraldic right) and blue (heraldic left), which appear in the shield vertical.

On May 23, 1803, the Grand Council of Ticino set up a commission with the task of giving the canton its own colors, and established them with a decree of May 26, 1803: “The colors of the canton of Ticino are red and blue”. Since the arrangement of the two colors in the coat of arms and in the flags was not handled uniformly, the Grand Council of the canton issued a decree on September 20, 1922 regarding the "colors and seals of the canton", which was very unclear and therefore not uniform was handled. The State Council therefore passed a resolution on October 6, 1930, in which all Ticino flags of the square, longitudinally rectangular shape, as well as the armband were determined.
