Flag and coat of arms of the canton of St. Gallen
The flag and the coat of arms of the canton of St. Gallen represent a white ( heraldic : silver) bundle of rods with an ax on a green background.
The motif of the St. Gallen coat of arms comes from ancient Rome. When high-level individuals, such as judges, appeared in public, they were preceded by at least two lictors who served as bodyguards . As a symbol of the judiciary, they carried a bundle of rods with an ax.
The eight bars in the bundle, only five of which are visible, symbolize the eight constituencies of the canton of St. Gallen today , the former districts . The ribbons symbolize cohesion and the ax symbolizes strength.
The stand colors are green and white. Although the canton takes its name from the city of the same name , the canton's coat of arms was a new creation. The coat of arms of the city of St. Gallen shows a bear.
The various versions and designs of the St. Gallen cantonal coat of arms have had a uniform appearance since March 1, 2011. The battle ax was redefined as the hatchet without a thorn and the green.
Blazon
The official blazon of the St. Gallen coat of arms is until 2011:
- « In green a bundle of silver rods (fasces) with five visible rods and a right-turning silver ax with a thorn on the back, crossed by a green ribbon. »
