Meaning and description

Flag monument. December 1980
Rally on the square around the flag monument, August 22, 1981

The flag monument, also known as the “flag” for short in Halle, was erected as the “Flame of the Revolution” in 1967 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution . It was made of reinforced concrete and is about 20 meters high. It is a thin concrete slab that, in three turns, simulates the shape of waving flag fabric. The monument was originally painted red . It was reminiscent of the red flag as a symbol of the communist party . The memorial was a design component of a parade area with a speaker's platform and ancillary facilities.

In the German Democratic Republic , the square was used for marches, rallies and political celebrations. The speaker's platform bore the inscription "Preserve our life and make it more beautiful" .

Location

The flag monument was built near the Kaiser Wilhelm monument (designed by Bruno Schmitz), which was erected in 1902 and demolished in 1947.

Todays situation

During the fall of the Wall, the complex was the location of democratic-opposition assemblies. The demolition or whereabouts of the monument was hotly controversial in the 1990s. Today the square has been largely redesigned in connection with the construction of an underground car park and reintegrated into the adjacent green spaces of the city's former fortification ring. The flag monument was renovated and given a new color scheme.
