A lane narrowing is different from a lane closure if at least one lane per directional lane remains open. It can be displayed on both sides according to § 40 StVO by sign 120 (narrowed lane) or sign 121 (one-sided right narrowed lane).

Roadways narrowed on both sides are often a less wide bridge , underpass or a traffic-calmed area . Roadways narrowed on one side (right) are often a work place or a traffic obstacle, especially on inner-city and extra-urban roads.

Slowly approach the bottleneck is indicated. Often the traffic signs 308 or 309 regulate the right of way.

On multi-lane roads, especially on federal motorways , the zip fastener method is to be used if several lanes end abruptly in each direction and at least one continuous lane is omitted.
