Vehicle heating

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vehicle heating ensures that the passenger compartment of a vehicle has a comfortable temperature even when the outside temperature is low .

It is usually coupled with the engine cooling system of a motor vehicle. With water-cooled engines, the warm water is used with a second heat exchanger to heat the air in the cabin. Usually you can switch from circulating air to outside air . With circulating air, the heating is faster because the air that has already been heated is further heated. With outside air, fresh air is fed into the cabin. In both variants, the air circulation is supported by a fan with several levels.

Since the heater is only effective when the engine is running , there is sometimes an auxiliary heater in vehicles in which the occupants sit in the stationary vehicle for a long time . This is operated either electrically or with a burner in which the fuel used for the engine is burned. Depending on the design, the heat is either transferred directly to the air in the interior via a fan or to the cooling water via an electrically operated pump. The auxiliary heating can often also be switched on in a time-controlled or remote-controlled manner, so that a comfortable temperature already prevails when the vehicle starts moving. With water parking heaters, the engine can also be brought to operating temperature before starting.

Some vehicles are equipped with electric seat heaters , which can be preset using a timer or remote control.

The heaters of a vehicle also include:

  • Rear window heating : An electric heating wire is attached to the inside of the rear window and causes the window to heat up when switched on. The heating of the glass surface above the dew point prevents fogging or freezing of water.
  • Exterior mirror heating: The functionality is the same as the rear window heating and can usually be switched on together.
  • Windshield heating: The same type of heating is used here as well. However, the heating wires must not impair the field of vision and must therefore be much finer.
  • Neck heating : a neck heating in roadsters and convertibles .
  • Steering wheel heating: There are integrated heating elements in the steering wheel.
