The Falls of Shin are a series of waterfalls and rapids in the Scottish Highlands and are a popular tourist attraction. They are located in Sutherland in the north of the Highlands south of Lairg in the River Shin , the outflow of Loch Shin . The falls are best known for the salmon , which can be observed almost all year round , which have to overcome the rapids on the way to their spawning grounds in Loch Shin and catapult themselves with powerful jumps over the various rapids up to six meters high. The salmon can be easily observed from a platform on the river bank.
The cases are in the area of the Balnagowan Estate , owned by the Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed . The visitor center set up on the estate next to the falls burned down in May 2013, but is to be rebuilt. In March 2016, the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust received £ 1 million from lottery funds in support .
