False core
A possible color core formation in the inner trunk area of older beeches ( beech red core ) and ash trees (ash brown core) is called a false core . False kernels also occur less frequently in maples , birches and pears .
In the case of beeches, the red heart is created by removing water from physiologically inactive wood layers. This causes the vessels to fill with air, and the change in color is then caused by oxidation processes . False cores are usually regarded as serious wood defects , but they do not reduce the strength of the wood.
