Fama Diagne Sène (* 1969 in Thiès ) is a Senegalese writer (novel and short story) and poet . She received the Tchicaya U Tam'si Prize in 2011 .

Life

Fama Diagne Sène went to university in Thiès and became a teacher there. Her colleague Ken Bugul counted her to the "illustrious women" of Senegalese literature. In 1997 she received the literary prize “Grand Prix du président de la République du Sénégal pour les Lettres” (Grand Prize of the President of the Republic of Senegal for literature) for her first novel Le chant des ténèbres [The Song of Darkness].

Coming from a Serer family herself, she denounced the Serer tradition in her controversial play Mbilem ou le baobab du lion , for which she was heavily criticized by the Serer traditionalists of Senegal. MBilène (variant: Bilim) is a religious festival in the Serer calendar, which is celebrated once a year and corresponds to the New Year . In pre-colonial times and until more recently, some Serer griots were buried in the trunks of a baobab tree , rather than in a pyramidal tomb with all the insignia prescribed by the Serer religion. Burial in a grave and mummification were always entitled to the Serer nobility, but some Serer griots were not buried in this way. In this piece, Sène criticizes this tradition and thus got on a course of confrontation with the Serer priest class.
