Family Flöz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flöz family is an international group of theater professionals based in Berlin. The troupe was founded in 1996 by Hajo Schüler and Michael Vogel and emerged from the pantomime course , today "Physical Theater" at the Folkwang University in Essen. The artistic development of the Flöz family was particularly influenced by Günter Titt, Pierre Byland and the masks of Amleto Sartori and Erhard Stiefel.

The Flöz family became internationally known for their comedic and poetic, almost always non-verbal plays with masks, which have received numerous awards. For the first guest appearance at the Edinburgh Festival in 2001, the troupe named themselves “Flöz production”, later “Familie Flöz”. From 2001 to 2006 the group played regularly in the Arena Berlin. In 2006 the Flöz family opened the studio in the restored Admiralspalast in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse.

To date, the Flöz family's pieces have been shown in 32 countries.

Company history

In 1996 the world premiere of "Familie Flöz comes over days" took place in the disused colliery Hanover in Bochum, a homage to the mining and working-class culture of the Ruhr area. The play was a great success with the press and the public, was awarded at the NRW theater festival FAVORITEN in Dortmund (formerly THEATERZWANG festival), and it was to give the troupe its name in 2003. The “ seam ” describes a layer of earth in which valuable raw materials are stored.

After numerous international guest appearances in France, Holland, Denmark and Slovakia, the second piece “Ristorante Immortale” came out in 1998 with a new ensemble in the Maschinenhaus Essen. This piece, too, an allegory about provisional life, dispenses with language and lives only through visual play, sounds and music. For the first guest performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2001, the troupe named themselves “Flöz production”, later “Familie Flöz”. The guest performance in Edinburgh was followed by invitations for Ristorante Immortale to all of Europe, Asia and Australia. In 1999 the first performance of Flöz took place in the Prater (Berlin) .

In the years 2000 and 2001 the productions "two% - happy hour", a room theater installation in the Maschinenhaus Essen, and "two% - homo oeconomicus" were created in cooperation with the Dortmund theater. Both pieces deal with people who buy and sell.

In 2001 the troop left the Ruhr area and moved to Berlin. Another great international success was achieved in 2004 with the play “Teatro Delusio”, a homage to the theater itself, premiered in the Arena Berlin. In the play about being, appearance and play, three actors embody 30 characters. In the same year the production made a guest appearance at the Edinburgh Festival, received numerous awards and toured in South America (including Festival Teatro Ibéroamericano Bogotá, Festival FITE Ecuador), Africa, Asia and Europe. Flöz made his first guest appearance at the International London Mime Festival and won the Prix du Jury at the Mimos Festival in Périgeux. Teatro Delusio was the first co-production with Theaterhaus Stuttgart , which has since been a continuous partner, venue and co-producer of the company.

In 2005 the annual Flöz Summer Academy took place for the first time in Italy, in which 30 young theater professionals from all over the world study and work with actors from Flöz. For the opening of the renovated Admiralspalast on Berlin's Friedrichstrasse, two new productions were created in 2006: “Infinita” (world premiere at the Berlin Academy of the Arts ) and “Hotel Paradiso”. “Infinita”, a physical mosaic, tells of becoming and passing, the first and last steps in life. The Hotel Paradiso is the setting of an abysmal alpine crime thriller. Both pieces have been shown more than 50 times in the studio of the Admiralspalast and have since toured successfully worldwide. In summer 2008 FLÖZ ended the collaboration with the Admiralspalast and continued to collaborate and produce regularly with the Theaterhaus Stuttgart and the Theater Duisburg .

At the Theaterhaus in Stuttgart, a second version of “Hotel Paradiso” was created in 2008 with a new ensemble. Between 2008 and 2010, Flöz toured alternately with four productions with a focus on Spain, Italy, Holland, Germany, Brazil and Mexico. In 2010, as part of the European Capital of Culture at the Duisburg Theater, the first version of “Garage d'Or” was created, an examination of man's hubris and his insatiable longings for distance, domination and conquest. The Berlin premiere took place in 2011 in the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz . The development of the second version of the piece was documented for the documentation of arteTV and WDR "Behind the Mask". The film premiered in 2012 as part of the euro-scene Leipzig festival, where Flöz was also awarded the audience award for the play Infinita. With an enthusiastic response from the audience and the press, Flöz ended his first guest appearance at the Avignon Festival in 2013, followed by performances in Lyon and Paris.

To date, Flöz has performed in 32 countries with his pieces. At the end of 2013, the company opened Studio Flöz in Berlin-Weissensee, a production and creation facility for international and physical theater.
