The Far del Cap Gros is a lighthouse on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It was inaugurated in 1859 on a cape on the western side of the Bay of Sóller near Port de Sóller and is still in operation today. The tower is registered under the international number E-0289 and the national ID 35360 and irradiates a sector from 54 to 232 degrees .
History and architecture
A lighthouse with an outbuilding was built in 1842 by the city council of Sóller, but not put into operation. It was handed over to the Ministry of Public Works in 1852 and commissioned by them on February 20, 1859 as a 4th order lighthouse. The construction of the facility took place without the involvement of engineers and architects. The interior of the building was also unusual. There was no work room for the lighthouse keeper who went to work in the lantern . The difficult working conditions compared to other lighthouses led to protests. Originally, a lantern fired with olive oil emitted a continuous white light. It was later replaced by a double-wick Maris lamp. In 1944 the lighthouse was electrified. The electric cables, which were destroyed by a lightning strike in 1952, could not be repaired until 1963. Until then, an Aladdin lamp served as a replacement. A sealed beam headlamp was installed in the 1970s and replaced with a Fresnel lens in 2008 .
A lighthouse keeper's house is located next to the cylindrical brick white tower with gray-metallic lantern and the double gallery built in 1963 or 1971. The original tower only had a simple gallery. The facility is accessed via a public road, but the tower is only accessible to authorized persons.
