Colorlessness

As colorless is called what no light absorbed and therefore no color has. So there is matter that does not interact with electromagnetic radiation in the visible ( VIS ) range.

Use of language

The term colorless has a double meaning in German:

  1. Colorlessness in the true sense of the word means that there is no dye (coloring substance or surface). Usually, a white surface is referred to as "colorless", although this should stand for uncolored, i.e. transparent things. Window glass is colorless in this regard. Window glass is constructed in such a way that as much visible light as possible passes through, so it has no color and no filter effect.
  2. On the other hand, color is a visual quality of vision that is based on color saturation . Correct, even if unfamiliar in everyday language use, the term is achromatic instead of colorless in this sense . Achromatic colors are the neutral gray tones without a color cast, i.e. the 'colorless' ones. The range of achromatic colors ranges from the darkest black to the lightest white. The non-neutral shades, i.e. those with a color cast, then belong to the colorful shades. For example, dove gray is a bluish gray.

Colorless flower white

People relate the proverbial flower white with their color perception to the white flower, even if it is actually "colorless" (without color tint), in the event that it should be an ideal flower white.

On the other hand, insects can clearly distinguish the white flower, at least when this genus perceives in the UV and the white flower absorbs below 400 nm. The "annoying" wasp that attacks the crisp white T-shirt in summer because it sees "color differences" is mentioned. It may be ignored that it also reacts to traces of scent from the detergent.
