"De Kat" paint mill
De Kat is a windmill in Zaanse Schans , a village and open-air museum in Zaandam in North Holland. It is the only still producing paint mill in the world; originally there were 50 paint mills in the vicinity. It is 21.80 meters high and has been under monument protection as Rijksmonument No. 40092 since 1960 .
The original mill with this name was built in 1646 and was converted into an oil mill from around 1689 ; this burned down on November 27, 1782 and was then rebuilt. The new mill was in operation until 1904 when it was partially demolished. In 1960, the octagonal superstructure and the interior of the De Duinjager paint mill were added to the substructure, which had been preserved together with the barn , making De Kat the "De Kat paint mill".
De Duinjager mill, originally a snuff mill from 1696, was originally located in Oostzijderveld. It burned down on June 19, 1781 and was then rebuilt.
De Kat is in daily operation in summer and, due to its location as the third mill on Kalverringdijk, one of the most visited mills in the Netherlands. Several millers use two grinders to grind chalk and color pigments into a fine powder using the traditional method and produce color products.
The mill is owned by Vereniging De Zaansche Molen (Association of Zaanscher Mills).
