The Farley Mowat was an ice-class deep sea patrol ship . Originally built for the Norwegian Fisheries Inspectorate, the ship was used by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society . The ship has been named after the Canadian writer Farley Mowat since 2002 .

history

In 2008 there was an incident between the Faley Mowat and the Des Groseilliers of the Canadian Coast Guard . Sea Sheperd protested the seal hunt in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence . The Coast Guard said the Des Groseilliers grazed the Farley Mowat twice while Sea Shepherd insisted it had been rammed. The incident occurred outside of Canada's 12-mile zone; However, Canada argued it had the right to protect its fishing rights outside of its territorial waters . On April 12, 2008, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police squad stormed the Faley Mowat and arrested the captain on charges of violating Canadian law by driving too close to the annual seal hunt in the Saint Lawrence River .

The ship was confiscated by the coast guard and later sold. In 2015 the ship sank in a Canadian port and in 2016 the hull was scrapped on behalf of the Canadian Coast Guard.

One more ship , built in 1992, is named Mowat since, 2015. It is also used for maritime environmental protection, but operates in the central and southern Pacific and is in service to this day (2018). The 1957 state-run Canadian pursuit of the ship has little chance in this case.
