In the village of Fasıllar , about 60 km west of Konya , southeast of Lake Beyşehir in the Turkish province of Konya, there is a large Hittite sculpture on a slope at an unknown ancient site .

In contrast to other works by Hittite sculptors, this is not a relief carved into an existing rock wall, but a free-standing (or lying) monument. It is 2.75 m wide and 8 m high and weighs around 70 tons. It is dated to the reign of Great King Tudhalija IV and probably shows Teššup , the weather god of the sky. He wears a cap with four horns that identify him as a god. His right hand is raised, while the left arm is only present as an unfinished stump. It is flanked by two lion figures, with one foot on a lion and the other on the figure of a mountain god.

Copy in the Ankara Museum

There are different opinions in science about the meaning of the work, among other things it is assumed that it was intended as a further piece of equipment for the sanctuary of Eflatun Pınar , about 40 km away , but was never completed. This is supported by the fact that some parts of the monument are executed in much more detail than the rest, but the size of the representation, which would far exceed that of the source sanctuary there, speaks against it.

In the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara an upright copy can the work be visited.

Roman rock tomb

On the opposite slope you can see a rock grave from the Roman Empire with a horse relief. It shows an arch on the left, which may have contained an urn or a statue of the buried, flanked by two non-fluted Corinthian columns . A stomping horse is carved to the right of it. According to an inscription, the grave is dedicated to a hero Progamios (unmarried hero) named Lukianos. Another inscription relates to competition rules.
